Thousands of journalists, shutterbugs and bloggers will flood into NYC during the final days of August to cover the Republican National Convention. Few will have the official press credentials that the NYPD issues to those reporters that it deems valid members of a free press. What are the rights of reporters without official or corporate credentials – and how can we prevent those rights from being trampled?

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is working closely with several media organizations to support free expression before, during and after the RNC. On the last Friday in August we will hold an informative briefing and networking session at our storefront office to provide up-to-date information on:

- the rights of all journalists on the streets and in encounters with the cops
- changing rules about recording or photographing in public in New York
- how to avoid hassles with the NYPD
- activist groups’ RNC demonstration plans and routes

We will also providing media activists, independent journalists and freelancers working in print, radio, photography, video, and web media with useful information and resources before the large protests kick off at the end of the month.

Journalists who expect to document protest activity during the RNC should email Ada Griffin (agriffin@nyclu.org) or Maggie Gram (mgram@nyclu.org) with name, affiliation, and contact information to pre-register for the briefing. Those who pre-register will receive a media tool kit at the workshop.
